3. How to change ETH to WETH in MetaMask

Let’s get to it!

If you hold wrapped Ether (WETH), you might be wondering how to add WETH to Metamask. The process is not as complicated as it seems.

For those who don’t know … wrapped Ether (WETH) is pegged on a 1:1 ratio to the price of Ether (ETH). Ethereum (ETH) doesn’t follow the ERC-20 standard because ERC-20 standards were created after the existence of ETH.

The purpose of WETH is to facilitate ERC-20 token exchanges to participate in the vast decentralized Ethereum ecosystem.

But enough about WETH. The process is super simple:

How to Add WETH to Metamask

There are numerous methods for adding WETH to Metamask. Here’s a quick guide:

STEP 1. Launch Metamask App and Unlock it

The first step is to access the Metamask wallet and unlock it by typing your password.

STEP 2. Pick a Blockchain Network

Wrapped Ether (WETH) can be added to Metamask on a wide range of EVM-compatible networks (We will cover them all).

The most popular blockchain networks are Ethereum, Polygon (MATIC), Binance Smart Chain (BSC), Arbitrum, and Avalanche

Note: Metamask connects to the Ethereum Mainnet by default. If you want to use another network, such as Polygon, click “add network” and choose whether to add the network automatically (from a list of popular networks) or manually by typing the network information.

STEP 3. Scroll down and click on Import Tokens

Go to your Metamask Wallet, under don’t see your token? Click on Import tokens

STEP 4. Search WETH or Import Token Contract Address

If you pick the Ethereum Mainnet, you can input WETH on the Search bar.

If you pick a different network, you will need to switch to that network, go to import token, and input the WETH token contract address

STEP 5. Add WETH Token to Metamask

The final step is to import the WETH token. If you pick the Ethereum Mainnet, just select WETH, click on Next, and Import Tokens.

If you wish to use a different network, click on add custom token and then Import Tokens.

Sinple isn’t it?

2. How do you change from ETH to WETH in Metamask?

Swapping ETH to WETH is a process known as wrapping. You can do it in two ways.

Here’s the deal:

  1. Swap it directly on Metamask: This is more convenient but more expensive. Metamask charges a 0.3% – 0.875% fee, depending on the size of the data (rather than the transaction amount).
  2. Use a Decentralized Exchange (DEX): Connect your Metamask to a DEX like Uniswap, which charges a ~0.3% fee.
Fast Definition: Wrapped cryptos are tied (1:1) to the value of another cryptocurrency or asset, such as gold, equities, share and real estate. The original asset (such as Ethereum) is locked into a smart contract (digital vault), and a freshly minted token (WETH) is issued to participate in a DeFi platform.

In this section, we will wrap Ethereum on Uniswap. Here are the steps:

STEP 0: Before anything …

  1. Ensure you have some ETH available in your wallet. Otherwise, you can buy ETH on an exchange like Binance or MEXC Global.
  2. Ensure you have added WETH to your Metamask Wallet (See Section 1).
  3. Ensure you are on a supported Uniswap Network (Ethereum, Polygon, or Arbitrum)

STEP 1: Connect Metamask to Uniswap

This step is crucial! Scammers use fake websites to steal your coins. Before connecting your wallet, make sure you’re on the official DEX website, or you risk losing your funds.
Never share your seed phrases or private keys with anyone! Keep your coins safe with a cold/hardware wallet!
You may potentially receive “spam tokens” in your wallet. Do not transact with such tokens, or you risk having your wallet compromised (aka hacked).
Connect Metamask to Uniswap

Connecting your Metamask Wallet to Uniswap is simple.

Now:

Click on “Connect Wallet” in the upper right corner, then select Metamask Wallet from the list. Enter your Metmask password and unlock your wallet. Once you are in, select the account (s) to use on this site, click on “Next” and “Connect.”

STEP 2: Wrap ETH (Swap ETH for WETH)

Buy WETH on Uniswap

After you’ve connected your wallet, the next step is to wrap Ethereum. Here are the steps:

  1. Ensure you are on “Swap.”
  2. In the Swap Box, select ETH and search for WETH.
  3. Enter the right amount of ETH you wish to swap for WETH and click “Wrap.” Then “confirm Swap”.

Voilà! Your Wrapped Ether (WETH) token just arrived on your Metamask Wallet!

3. Conclusion

Wrapped Ether (WETH) was designed to facilitate transactions in the vast Ethereum Ecosystem. Unfortunately, Ethereum native does not follow ERC-20 standards.

We have seen 4 ways to add WETH to metamask wallet, depending on the blockchain network you choose.

If you have a brand new Metamask wallet, the default network will be the Ethereum Mainnet. In that case, you only need to look for WETH and add it to your Metamask wallet.

For other networks, you must first add the blockchain network (if you haven’t already) and then import the WETH token contract address from a reputable site such as coinmarketcap or coingecko

Let’s recap our 5-step process:

  • Step 1: Launch Metamask App and Unlock it
  • Step 2: Pick a Blockchain Network (Ethereum, Polygon, BNB Chain or Arbitrum)
  • Step 3: Scroll down and click on import tokens
  • Step 4: Search for WETH or Import Token Contract Address from coinmarketcap.
  • Step 5: Add Wrapped Ether (WETH) Token to your Metamask

We have also learned how to change ETH for WETH with Metamask and Uniswap. Simply connect your wallet to Uniswap and click on [wrap] Ethereum.

4. FAQs

Is WETH and ETH the same?

No. Ethereum and Wrapped Ether (WETH) are not the same tokens. Ethereum is a native coin of the Ethereum Blockchain that does not follow ERC20 standards.

Wrapped Ether (WETH), on the other hand, is a wrapped token that is pegged to the value of Ethereum (1:1) to facilitate conversions between ERC20 tokens on various DeFi platforms.

Can I swap WETH on Metamask?

Yes. You can swap WETH directly on Metamask. To do so, follow these steps:

  1. Open your Metamask and ensure your network is Ethereum Mainnet
  2. Select Ethereum and Click [Swap]
  3. Select the Eth Amount and search for WETH on the Swap to field
  4. Click [Review Swap]
  5. Review the quote and conversion rate (which should be 1:1) and click [Swap] to wrap Ether.

Can you send Wrapped ETH to ETH wallet?

Yes. Metamask uses one public address for all your blockchain networks, coins, and tokens. For instance, the ERC-20 wallet address is the same as your BEP20 (BNB Chain), Polygon, or Avalanche addresses.

How to add WETH to Metamask Avalanche?

To add WETH to Avalanche Metamask follow these steps:

  1. Select the Avalanche C-Chain
  2. Click on Import Tokens (Under don’t see your token)
  3. Copy & Paste the WETH Avalanche C-Chain Token Contract Address (from coinmarketcap)
  4. Add WETH.e to Metamask
Note: WETH.e is a “bridged form of Ethereum WETH (WETH is originally an ERC20 token)” that was bridged from the Ethereum Blockchain via the Avalanche Bridge.
Avalanche does not support ERC20 tokens natively. Instead, it uses an EVM-compatible bridge (AB) that supports the transfer of ERC20 tokens from Ethereum to Avalanche’s C-Chain and vice versa.
