How to Add Solana to Metamask [Is that Even Possible in 2023?]

If you’ve bought Solana (SOL) you may be looking to add the Solana network to metamask and send some SOL. But is that even POSSIBLE? Let’s find out!

Today I’ll show you exactly (In 3 DETAILED Steps) how to add Solana to Metamask.

Here is what you’ll learn:

1. A 3 Simple and DETAILED step-by-step process to add Solana to Metamask. (HINT: A workaround)

2. The best way to add and store Solana (SOL)

3. Alternative wallets to store SOL (Plenty of choices!)

Let’s dive right in.

Last year I’ve purchased SOL on Binance. I was thinking about adding the Solana Network to Metamask and sending some SOL to my Metamask wallet.

But when I opened my crypto wallet, I wondered …. WHAT THE HECK?

Can You Add Solana to Metamask?

Unfortunately, you cannot add Solana to Metamask. The only way to add SOL to Metamask is by using an Ethereum-compatible network like the Binance Smart Chain (BSC). In other words, adding the BNB Chain SOL version (Binance Wrapped SOL).

Metamask is only compatible with Ethereum-based tokens (ERC-20) and Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) networks. In other words, you cannot run the iOS operating system on an Android device (and vice versa).

If you are looking to add SOL to Metamask, here’s a quick guide:

How to Add Solana to Metamask

Want to jump straight to the answer? Here’s our 3-step guide

Add Binance Wrapped SOL

Adding Solana Network to Metamask is not possible. We will need to add a Metamask-compatible blockchain, like the Binance Smart Chain (BNB Chain), and then convert SOL to Wrapped SOL.

Here is my 3-step process

  • Step 1: Add the Binance Smart Chain (BNB Chain) Network
  • Step 2: Add the Wrapped SOL to your Metamask Wallet
  • Step 3: Withdraw/Send your SOL using the Binance Smart Chain

PRO TIP: How to store the native SOL rather than the Wrapped SOL.

We always recommend storing the token’s native version. This is the version you will need if you want to interact with the Sol ecosystem.

If you want to store the SOL native token, use a Solana-compatible wallet. There are several to choose from, including hot (software wallets) such as Phantom Wallet, Trust Wallet (mobile), or Solflare to hardware wallets like Ledger Nano X, Ellipal, or SafePal

Note: If you want to sleep like a baby at night, store your coins safely on a cold Wallet like Ledger Nano X.

If you want us to walk you through the whole process step-by-step (in both methods).

1. How to Add Solana in 3 DETAILED Steps

The Solana Network (SPL) is not compatible with Ethereum-based wallets like Metamask. To add sol to Metamask, we can use a different network or blockchain (Method 1) or a different wallet like Phantom Wallet (Method 2) or other alternative wallets (bonus)

In this section, you’ll learn two different methods to store SOL in your wallet.

In METHOD 1 you’ll add the Binance Wrapped SOL to Metamask.

In METHOD 2 you’ll learn to store SOL on a popular Solana Wallet (Phantom Wallet)

  • LOTS more!

I will not leave any stone unturned (If you are new, DON’T WORRY!)

Method 1 – How to Add Wrapped SOL to Metamask

The first method you can use to add Solana to your Metamask Wallet is to convert your original SOL to a wrapped version that can run on the Binance Smart Chain. In other words, converting SOL to Binance Wrapped SOL.

Note: Bear in mind that this is not the original (native) SOL token. If you want to interact with the Solana ecosystem, you will need Solana in its native form. See Phantom Wallet

In other words, Wrapped SOL is simply an SOL version that uses a different blockchain. In fact, you can easily swap your Wrapped Solana to SOL using a cross-chain bridge like the Binance Bridge

If you understand this, let’s add sol (wrapped sol) to your Metamask Wallet using the Binance Smart Chain (BNB Chain). Let’s do it!

Add Binance Smart Chain to Metamask

STEP 1: Add Binance Smart Chain (BNB Chain) to Metamask

1. The first thing we have to do is to add the Binance Smart Chain (BNB Chain) to your Metamask. By default, you have the Ethereum Mainnet.

2. Click on says Ethereum Mainnet and then click the “add networks” button.

You can either add the BNB Chain automatically from the list (BNB Smart Chain – previously Binance Smart Chain Mainnet) or manually (copy the data exactly as you see below).

Network Name: BNB Smart Chain
New RPC URL: https://bsc-dataseed.binance.org/
ChainID: 56
Symbol: BNB
Block Explorer URL: https://bscscan.com

3. Close the window and select the BNB Smart Chain Network.

How to add solana to Metamask

STEP 2: Add Wrapped SOL on Metamask

1. To add the Wrapped SOL token we need to ensure that we are using the right token contract address.

You can find the token contract address on coinmarketcap or BscScan

Solana BEP20 (Wrapped SOL) Token Contract Address: [0x570a5d26f7765ecb712c0924e4de545b89fd43df]

Copy the address

2. The second thing is to unlock your Metamask wallet with your password

3. Then, on the initial screen go to import tokens. Select “add custom token”, paste the Wrapped SOL token address and click on “import token.” You should see SOL token displayed on your wallet.

If your Solana sits on an exchange like Binance or another wallet, you will need to withdraw/send your SOL to your Metamask Wallet.

How to transfer SOL from Binance to Metamask?
Transfer Sol from Binance to Metamask

Here are the steps to withdraw Solana from Binance to Metamask Wallet.

Note: Ensure that the Binance Smart Chain (BNB Chain) is enabled and set as your default network.

Binance: Go to wallet > fiat & spot > Next to SOL click on Withdraw > input Metamask wallet* > select BSC (BEP20) > withdrawal amount > Click Withdraw.

*In Metamask, the wallet address is under your account name (initial page). Ensure you are on the right network (Smart Chain). Easy, RIGHT?

NOTE: Do not send Solana (SOL) native tokens to your Metamask wallet address or you risk losing your funds. Despite having the same value, Solana (SOL) and Wrapped SOL are distinct tokens running on different blockchains. If you’ve used Method 1, Only send SOL to your Metamask wallet via the Binance Smart Chain (BEP20)

METHOD 2 – How to add SOL to Phantom Wallet

The second method you’ll learn is to add Solana (SOL) to a compatible SOL Wallet like Phantom Wallet.

Phantom Wallet was introduced in 2021 as a self-custody DeFi wallet for Solana-based decentralized applications (dApps) and non-fungible tokens (NFTs). With over 3 million active users, it is one of the fastest-growing wallets. Recently, it has added support for Ethereum and Polygon Blockchains.

This is the easiest method. And the one we recommend. Phantom Wallet can hold the SOL native version to interact with the Solana ecosystem and its applications (dApps).

Without further delay, let’s download and set up the Phantom Wallet on your device

To add SOL to Phantom Wallet follow these steps:

STEP 1: Download & Install Phantom Wallet
How to download Phantom Wallet

Step 0: To get started, please install Phantom Wallet (completely free). You can download the Browser Extension (Chrome, Brave, Firefox, Edge) and mobile versions (Android or iOS).

We will install the browser chrome version.

Step 1: Go to the chrome web store and add the Phantom Wallet to your chrome browser.

Step 2: Click on create a “New Wallet” and generate a centuries-proof password. When you are done, click on continue.

Step 3: Save your 12-word secret recovery phrase (seed phrase) somewhere safe. This phrase is the only way to recover your wallet in case you forget your password or lose your device. Do NOT share it with anyone!

Tick the I saved by Secret Recovery Phrase and click on “Continue.”

Step 4: Check the handy shortcut (Alt + Shift + P) to open Phantom Wallet and click on “Continue.”

Step 5: Pin the Phantom Extension to your bookmarks bar for easy access and click on Finish

You’re all done!

Ensure SOL is Enabled

Solana is activated by default on your phantom wallet. You do not need to take any action. If it is not enabled, go to Manage Tokens and click the enable button.

How to send SOL to Phantom Wallet

If your SOL sits on an exchange like Binance or another wallet, you will need to withdraw/send your Solana to your Phantom Wallet.

How to send Solana (SOL) from Binance to Phantom Wallet?

Here are the steps to withdraw SOL from Binance to Metamask Wallet.

Binance: Go to wallet > fiat & spot > Next to SOL click on Withdraw > input Phantom wallet Address* > Select Solana (SOL) Network > withdrawal amount > Click Withdraw.

*In Phantom Wallet, the wallet address is under the title (E.g., Wallet 1). Click on the dropdown icon and copy the address.

METHOD 3 – Alternatives

Here are alternative wallets you can use to store Solana (SPL) tokens. To store SOL away from online hackers, we recommend a hardware wallet like Ledger Nano X

There are two types of crypto wallets:

  • Software (Online) Wallets: Software wallets are connected to the internet and are useful to move funds quickly.  Metamask and Trust Wallet are the most popular ones.
  • Hardware (Offline) Wallets: Hardware wallets are the most secure way to store your coins and keep them away from hackers. The best hardware wallets for storing ADA tokens are Ledger Nano XEllipal Titan, and SafePal.

Alternative Solana (SOL) Hot Wallets

Trust Wallet

Ellipal Titan is both a Hot (online) and Cold (hardware wallet). It uses air-gapped technology (to keep your coins 100% offline), a metal seal (against physical attacks of any kind), and anti-tamper technology (automatically deletes the device’s data in case of a breach).

Ellipal Titan can be used with mobile devices (iOS and Android).

SafePal

SafePal is also a Hot (online) and Cold (hardware wallet). It supports more than 54 Blockchains (30k+ tokens). It employs air-gapped technology (which keeps your coins completely offline) and offers a fast, intuitive interface on all platforms.

SafePal is available for mobile devices (iOS and Android) and browser extensions like Chrome, Firefox, and Microsoft Edge.

2. Conclusion

Solana network does not natively support the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM). Which means that can’t be added directly to your Metamask Wallet.

Metamask can only be set up with EVM-compatible networks such as Ethereum, Avalanche, Binance Smart Chain, Polygon, etc.

To add Solana to Metamask we only have one option (Wrapped SOL). However, if you wish to add the SOL native version (SOL coin), consider an alternative wallet. There are a few Solana-compatible wallets you can use.

Method 1: Add Wrapped SOL to Metamask

  • Step 1: Add the Binance Smart Chain (BNB Chain) Network
  • Step 2: Add Wrapped SOL to your Metamask Wallet
  • Step 3: Withdraw/Send your SOL using the Binance Smart Chain

Method 2 (Recommended): Add Solana (SOL) to a Sol-compatible Wallet

  • Step 1: Download Sol Compatible Wallet (e.g., Phantom Wallet)
  • Step 2: Look for SOL and activate it (if it isn’t already).
  • Step 3: Withdraw/Send SOL (SOL) to your Wallet
Do not forget to store your coins safely on a cold wallet like Ledger Nano X, Ellipal, or Safepal
